A Beautiful Fall Day

It's That Time of Year

We came to school and it was kind of chilly, but it warmed up quickly.

The children are really enjoying building with the outside blocks. They are mostly making boats.

The last group made their boats for our sink and float project.

The writing station was filled with activity today.

Running and running in the gym is always a great Friday activity.

Will It Float? Part Two

Morning Station

Working together on a beautiful design

Chapel

Mr. Debrick read John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish." He then talked about cheering for our favorite team. He reminded us to cheer for Jesus through our words and actions.

How many pennies will your boat hold?

We tested one boat. First, we predicted how many pennies it would hold.  Then we tested it. This boat held six pennies.

This boat held all 45 pennies. Before we went to chapel, we noticed some water leaking through some very small holes. When we returned from chapel, this boat had sank.

More Testing

Today these children had a chance to make a boat and test it. Many of them made a boat with sides.

For our last boat of the day, we decided to see how many things we could add to the boat before it sank.

We kept adding things from around the room.

And finally it sank!

Will It Float?

Today we made our boats out of aluminum foil.
This group talked about how their boat needed to have sides.

Each boat was placed in the water. Then the creator added pennies, one at a time.

Some of the boats held three or four pennies. Other boats held 45 pennies.

Learning Centers

Today during learning centers, many children told Mrs. Lohman the names of upper case letters and some lower case letters. This assessment is completed in fall and then again in the spring.

The rest of the room was filled with children engaged in many wonderful learning experiences.

Engineering

Small Groups

Today the children were given a challenge. They need to make a boat using aluminum foil that will float and hold some pennies. Today's goal was to design their boat. Before designing their boat, they looked at some toy boats and talked what a good design would look like. Tomorrow they will use their design to make their boat.
Engineers hard at work designing their boats.

During their independent group time, the children used the small blocks to make some pretty awesome buildings.

Fire Drill

Today we had a fire drill with the Fire Department watching us. We did a great job! We also thought it was pretty awesome to see our fire alarm lights flashing before we went outside.

Sink or Float

Whole Group Time

We love reading Fancy Nancy! She loves such fancy words.

Small Group Time

After reading Fancy Nancy, we talked about what STEM means. Mrs. Lohman introduced the fancy words, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Throughout the day we heard Mrs. Lohman using those words.

As we continued our STEM project connected with the book Who Sank the Boat?, we reviewed what items in our collection sank or floated. We practiced being scientists as we tested what happens when something is put inside a floating lid.

Jesus Time

This week's story is when God's people built the tower of Babel. They were so focused on what they were doing, the people forgot about God. Because of this, God confused their language and the people scattered to different places in the world. We are reminded in this story to keep our focus on Jesus and how He always takes care of us.

Outside Time

Over the weekend some signs of fall including a very interesting pumpkin were added to our play space. Some children were fascinated by many ants scurrying around one of the tree stumps.

While outside, this pair found a seed. They brought it inside, broke it open and examined what they found.
